MACC Scene by Karee Carlucci

March 31, 2010 - Mark Vieth

Sometimes known as the Maui Benoits, Phil and Angela Benoit will be joining renowned pianist brother, David Benoit, on Saturday, April 10, at 7 p.m. in Castle Theater at the MACC for an Evening with the Benoit Family.

Phil Benoit had this to say about the concert: “The show this year will be our second family concert. Our six piece band of outstanding Maui musicians will open the show: Marcus Johnson on bass, Paul Marchetti on drums, Chris Dennis on percussion, Sal Godinez on keyboards, John Zangrando on flutes and sax, and Steve Dubey on trumpet. There will be surprise family guest artists for the big finale.”

Phil, the guitar-playing younger brother of the family, is a self-taught artist. He’s been studying and playing jazz guitar for the last decade after preferring blues and rock in his earlier years. Angela Benoit, a Maui native, brings an irresistible, smooth approach to her singing. She’s a natural talent who has a remarkable studio presence as well as captivating stage appeal. Phil and Angela have been married 22 years, and performing professionally and making records since 1997. Together, they have released two CDs under the Benoit Jazz Works name: "Watch What Happens" in 2003 and "A Man and A Woman" in 2005. Their latest CD, "Golden Sun," will be released on April 8.

A five-time Grammy nominee for his notable contributions to contemporary jazz, David Benoit has also journeyed into the classical music world with guest pianist and conductor spots in top symphonies and philharmonics. David’s career as a contemporary jazz pianist began in 1977 and includes 23 solo recordings, many of which are considered influential classics in the Smooth Jazz genre.

David will take the stage with his band, featuring Dean Taba on bass, Noel Okimoto on drums, Chris Dennis on percussion, Maui’s Dave Choy on sax, and Phil Benoit on guitar. They’ll play some of David’s hits from the past and songs from his new record, "Earthglow," which will be released at the end of April.

Tickets to the Benoit Family concert are selling for $25, $35 and $45 ($5 discount is available on all prices for kids, students with I.D. and seniors). Moana Café will serve pre-show dinner under the stars from 5:30 pm. Call the MACC Box Office at 808-242-SHOW or order online at
